The human immune system is a complex network involving numerous cells and mechanisms designed to protect the body from pathogens and infections. The roles of diet, lifestyle, stress reduction and dietary supplementation have all been studied for their ability to support the immune system. Supplementation with antioxidants and micronutrients also provides fuel for the cells. Antioxidants (substances that protect cells form oxidative damage) play an important part in immune health. Studies have found some patients with poor immune health are often times deficient in antioxidants such as vitamins C, E, and A along with others including acetyl-L-carnitine and glutathione. Oral glutathione is not well absorbed in the body. N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC) is used to recharge glutathione supplies. Lipoic acid is also capable of recharging other antioxidants like ascorbate (vitamin c), vitamin e, and glutathione. During times of stress, the body uses some antioxidants, such as vitamin c, more quickly, dietary supplementation may be beneficial in times of stress to support the bodies increased needs and provide extra fuel for the body. It is well known micronutrients play an important part in immune health. When the immune system is stressed or weak, micronutrients have been shown to be beneficial in recovery times and cell health, taken prophalactily micronutrients can help strengthen the immune system, lessening the chance for illness. While the mechanisms of each micronutrient are complex and some not widely understood, micronutrient therapy has been widely used in main stream medicine and continues to be studied. Deficiencies in some micronutrients have also been associated with poor immune health.
