Evening Primrose Oil: The oil of Evening Primrose (Oenothera biennis L.) has been sought after due to its content of gammalinolenic acid (GLA). Evening Primrose Oil (EPO) contains 8-10% GLA (Omega 6), 50-70% cis-linoleic acid (Omega-6), and small amounts of oleic, palmitic, and stearic acid.
As a source of both GLA and other Omega-6 essential fatty acids, EPO is often taken as a daily supplement by many, and used therapeutically in skin and female health. GLA has been shown to inhibit platelet aggregation. GLA is a precursor to PGE1 prostaglandins, responsible for a number of health benefits.
Evening Primrose Oil (EPO) supplies 130 mg of Gamma-Linolenic Acid (GLA) per softgel and up to 390 mg per day to help provide nutritional support for overall health and for women with PMS.* GLA is an omega-6 fatty acid that can be synthesized from Linoleic Acid in the body by the rate-limiting enzyme delta-6 desaturase. However, biological conversion is estimated to be less than 10% and is affected by several factors, including aging; intake of certain nutrients such as zinc, B6, magnesium, biotin and calcium; stress; and cholesterol levels. GLA does not have significant food sources, so supplementation may be important.
STRUCTURE AND FUNCTION
GLA promotes cellular and metabolic health.* It is a precursor to prostaglandins, action-specific bio-molecules that regulate many important functions in cells, and provides nutritional support for women with PMS by modulating prostaglandin production.* GLA supports cardiovascular health by promoting the release of prostacyclin, a vasodilator.* GLA also supports the immune system and can help with dry skin.*
